The organisation was established in December of 2020 when Siya, aged 19 and 9 months pregnant was raped, brutally murdered, and dumped on the side of a major highway outside Cape Town. Because her story is so common in South Africa it was never even reported on in the press, and her killer has never been found.

GRIT –  Gender Rights in Tech, (formerly Kwanele Bringing Women Justice) was established in response to the increasing Gender Based Violence and Femicide in South Africa. Kwanele aims to amplify Siya’s voice and the thousands of women like her and to create a platform to assist in obtaining justice for these crimes.

The Kwanele App Western Cape Pilot project seeks to recruit and train up to 10,000 women to use the Kwanele App on their mobile device. We will use the pilot to test the app and get feedback from the users. This will enable us to ensure we have a scalable solution that we can the roll out Nationally in 2023. We have already started building a team of fieldworkers and Ambassadors to assist with on boarding users to the Kwanele App. The main goal being to prevent situation of GBVF and assist victims get the services required to support healing.
